GWAS Short & Sweet

Greetings, Satchelings, and welcome to Short & Sweet, your visual segue into another week on the glossy beat via Girl With a Satchel...

After last month's Madison 'age issue' cover made the news (and a segment on Today Tonight) for giving readers a bum-steer with a 10-year-old photograph of Christy Turlington, I was itching to see how the mag would redeem itself this month. Upon seeing the cover, I promptly put my hand to my forehead and said a little "Oh, no".

While I love a silver foil cover, it's going to take some grace to push aside the photo etching and Hudson's petite plastic perfection and embrace 'The Body Issue'. But if ever there was a case of 'Don't judge a mag by its cover', this would be it. Because inside you'll find Paula Joye's compassionate editor's letter addressing the hardship of producing a body image issue, as well as lots of gorgeous, celebratory images to compensate for Kate, like this shot of model Alana, who may be our Lizzi Miller (but is given four full-page images!)...

Or this shot of top Aussie models Rachel, Pania, Elyse, Alexandra and Sarah in a nod to the Witchery White Shirt Campaign (which produced a stellar cover image last year)...

The promotional poster snapped outside my newsagent is also rather fetching...

Harper's BAZAAR's worst-kept secret cover of Jennifer Hawkins dazzles from the newsstand with its fluoro orange masthead, bold Balmain jacket, silver COZI (by Jen Hawkins) bikini and crazy fonts. One Fashion Spot reader says it's "very reminiscent of Elle Macpherson in the 90s", and I agree. Tall and tanned and young and lovely, the girl from Holmesville is as hot as a bitumen road on a summer scorcher. Stay tuned to GWAS this week for a review of the issue.

Competing for attention, Cosmopolitan screams "Look at me!" from the shelves this month with a fluoro lime cover and spicy Leighton Meester in a bombshell frock. It's like a tube of Juicy Fruit exploded inside, too.

The Glossips

On the glossip front, Woman's Day runs with an exclusive of Bold and the Beautiful star Ron Moss's wedding to an ex Playboy playmate, while Ajay Rochester looks like a Playboy playmate on the cover of New Idea. Rochester has shed 87kg, while a 140kg K-Fed is "off to fat camp", according to NW. Meanwhile, Grazia runs a personal story out of the Samoan tsunami tragedy, which is followed by a page of supermodels walking the runway of Dolce & Gabanna (uncomfortable juxtaposition much?).

The Breakfast Club

Feeling like something refined after a night of footy viewing? Then spread some delicate pieces of toast with jam, pour a cup of English Breakfast tea and nibble on some red grapes. Your inspiration: not the Queen of England but the talented Cesca.

Yours truly,
Girl With a Satchel
